Assembly Technician

Building go-karts and fixing bikes as a child, Declan always knew he wanted to work in engineering and studied engineering technology at college. When he came across the Advanced Apprenticeship offered by High Performance Powertrains (HPP) – a Mercedes-Benz technology centre where Formula 1 engines are designed, manufactured, assembled and tested – he jumped at the chance to apply and has never looked back.

Currently, his role as an Assembly Technician means that he gets to work with people developing race engines for the Mercedes AMG Formula 1 team and three partner teams: Force India, Williams and Manor. Formula 1 is a highly competitive business, which means that Declan and the rest of the Assembly technicians are constantly working to give their team the edge. “I am part of a continuous development drive to improve the performance, efficiency and durability of our power unit. We always work in pairs – this is to reduce build time, but it also allows us to check each other’s work; the cost of a mistake is too great!”

When it comes to watching a big race on a Sunday, Declan isn’t nervous. “I love that I can sit down with my friends and family and watch our engines go around the track at iconic race circuits across the world.” As for recommending his job to others, Declan is unequivocal. “If someone was looking at a technician role, they would definitely enjoy working at HPP. We have great people working here, fantastic facilities and so many potential opportunities ahead of us.”
