Senior Orthotic Technician

“It’s really rewarding to be able to help improve someone’s way of life.” For Alan, his role as a Senior Orthotic Technician is more than just a job. At Peacocks Medical Group, Alan creates bespoke orthotic devices, such as braces and surgical supports, to help patients with injuries or lifelong conditions to walk and be pain-free.

“I was unsure what route I wanted to take in my career, but I always knew I wanted to be creative and I didn’t want to sit at a desk all day. I wanted a hands-on role where I could develop and grow whilst helping people.”

An NVQ in Manufacturing paved the way before Alan completed an apprenticeship in Industrial Applications at Peacocks Medical Group. Using a mix of cutting-edge technology and traditional manufacturing techniques, Alan creates custom-made devices that support, protect and improve the function of a person’s limb or their upper body.

For patients with medical conditions like spina bifida or cerebral palsy, orthotic braces and splints offer welcome relief and provide mobility support. At Peacocks, every device is as unique as the patient and is handmade to fit the individual’s requirements.

“I once made splints for a lady who had been unable to stand for five years. Thanks to the orthotic splints, she was able to stand at the altar for her wedding. There’s nothing more rewarding than that.”

Alan’s technical career has allowed him to thrive and succeed, and he would encourage anyone to follow in his footsteps: “If you’re creative, love problem-solving and working with your hands, there’s no better career for you.”
