Khalid Maalim

IT Technician

Khalid's job title is IT Support Officer at the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts

What I do

I help people who are experiencing any issues with the IT system. It’s really varied, so it could be something simple like someone not being able to print something, or a bigger issue where someone is having trouble logging in to the accounts system.

How I became a technician

A typical day in my
working life

In the morning, I like to arrive a little bit earlier than everyone else, before the office gets busy. I will start by catching up on any repairs or troubleshooting any problems that have been logged overnight. I see if there is anything I can quickly work on and then I prioritise requests.

The rest of the day tends to be supporting users with any issues whether it’s hardware (equipment) or software (digital).

A little more about
my everyday role

The best bits about working in a team

I work in a small IT team of six; they are great and very supportive. They are always there to offer advice and overall the work flows better in a team. It’s great having other people around you - there’s a nice camaraderie.

The most exciting thing I’ve achieved so far in my job

When I was working at the care home I updated their filing system for client files. Their old system was very outdated - it was lots of dusty cabinets full of sensitive information! Me and a colleague revamped the whole system - we scanned all the files and kept them safe on a new, secure database. The manager was really grateful and they still use our system to this day.

The next steps in my career journey

I don’t have an exact plan - because in IT things can change very quickly. There are always new technologies and systems, so I just want to stay on top of it and keep advancing.
